**“You Never Knew My Name”** is a haunting Celtic lament about the people we pass every day but rarely truly see.

Told through the voices of people experiencing homelessness and poverty, the song looks beyond the cardboard signs, worn clothes, old cars and tired faces to reveal the human lives behind them. A man remembers being a little boy who dreamed of building airplanes. A mother quietly sleeps in her car with her children, pretending it is an adventure so they never know how afraid she really is.

The song isn't asking for pity. It's asking for something much simpler: humanity.

It reminds us that poverty does not erase a person's childhood, dreams, dignity or name. Every person we walk past was once a child held in someone's arms. Every one of them had hopes for what their life might become.

Musically, the song begins intimate and fragile, with piano, cello and a vulnerable vocal. Mournful bagpipes slowly enter as the story grows, carrying the feeling of a funeral lament for people society has forgotten.

There is no triumphant ending.

The music falls away until one simple request remains:

**Look at me.
Say hello.
Ask my name.**

Because I have one.

I always had one.

You just never asked.

**[Verse 1 — Quiet, piano]**

You see the man beneath the bridge,
And wonder why he stays.
You see the woman asking change,
Then quickly look away.
You tell yourself you worked for yours,
That they could do it too,
But you don't know the road they walked,
Or what they had to lose.

You had a bed, they had a floor,
You had a key, they had a door
That locked behind them one last time
When there was nowhere left to go.
You learned to dream about tomorrow,
They learned to make it through tonight.
Before you judge the way they're living,
Ask who taught them how to fight.

**[Pre-Chorus]**

What if your first step
Was already ten miles behind?
What if survival
Was the only dream you had time to find?

**[Chorus — Band enters]**

If you had my beginning,
Would you still be where you are?
If nobody told you you mattered,
Would you still have reached this far?
If every door that opened for you
Had been a wall instead—
Would you call me weak for falling
When you've never walked my steps?

I don't need your pity.
I don't need you looking down.
I need you to remember
We're both human standing here right now.

If you had my beginning...
Tell me where would you be now?

**[Verse 2 — Building]**

Some children inherit houses,
Some inherit someone's debt.
Some are taught that they can conquer,
Some are taught they're worthless yet.
Some have tutors at the table,
Some have hunger there instead.
Some hear, "What college will you choose?"
Some hear, "How will we get fed?"

One child learns about investments,
One learns when the shelters close.
One gets handed introductions,
One gets handed worn-out clothes.
Then twenty years go rushing by,
And somehow we pretend
They stood upon the same starting line
And simply chose a different end.

**[Pre-Chorus — Bigger]**

Tell me what is merit
When the starting lines aren't the same?
How can we measure someone's journey
When we never carried their pain?

**[Chorus]**

If you had my beginning,
Would you still be where you are?
If nobody told you you mattered,
Would you still have reached this far?
If every door that opened for you
Had been a wall instead—
Would you call me weak for falling
When you've never walked my steps?

I don't need your pity.
I don't need you looking down.
I need you to remember
We're both human standing here right now.

If you had my beginning...
Tell me where would you be now?

**[Bridge — Music drops almost completely]**

I am not the clothes I'm wearing.
I am not the place I sleep.
I am not the empty pockets
Or the promises I couldn't keep.

I was somebody's little child once.
I laughed.
I dreamed.
I cried.

There was a world inside of me
Before the world passed me by.

And maybe I made mistakes.
Maybe I lost my way.
Maybe you would've done better...

Maybe.

But you don't know.

Because you didn't live my yesterday.

**[Instrumental Rise — Orchestra and drums building]**

So don't tell me what I'm worth
From the view above the street.
Come down here and meet my eyes.

Come stand next to me.

**[Final Chorus — Full orchestra, rock band and massive choir]**

IF YOU HAD MY BEGINNING,
WOULD YOU STILL BE WHERE YOU ARE?
IF YOUR DREAMS WERE BORN IN DARKNESS,
WOULD YOU STILL HAVE CHASED THE STARS?

IF THE WORLD HAD CALLED YOU NOTHING
BEFORE YOU LEARNED YOUR NAME,
WOULD YOU HAVE RISEN THROUGH THE FIRE—
OR WOULD YOU HAVE DONE THE SAME?

We don't need your pity!
We don't need you looking down!
We need a world that remembers
WE ARE ALL HUMAN HERE AND NOW!

Give the hungry something more than blame!
Give the forgotten back their name!
Give the child without a chance
A chance to finally begin!

**[Choir]**

WE ARE MORE THAN WHERE WE STARTED!
WE ARE MORE THAN WHAT YOU SEE!
WE ARE MORE THAN OUR MISFORTUNE!
WE ARE MORE THAN POVERTY!

**[Lead Vocal Over Choir]**

Before you judge another life,
Before you turn away...

Remember—

You could have been me.

**[Choir — enormous]**

AND I...

COULD HAVE...

BEEN...

YOU.

**[Outro — everything falls away to piano]**

If you had my beginning...

Tell me...

Where would you be now?
